An Art Studio in a Mug: A Caretaker’s Note

Part of the fun of creating a gift in a mug is the limitation of space. You’ve only got so much room. You could tuck in something as grand as the key to a new car or as simple as penny candy. Fit to any budget, it becomes a thoughtful gift paired with a collectible mug featuring original artwork. The challenge—and the joy—lies in what you choose and the care you put into it.

When thinking about a gift for a friend who loves to paint, I chose the Parrot Mug. Parrots, with their intelligence and vivid colors, are symbols of beauty, passion, and creativity. From there, the idea blossomed: a studio in a mug—everything she needs to create small paintings on the go.

Tools to put into an art studio in a mug: paint sticks, water brushes, artist trading cards

In my version, three water brushes are tucked inside. Each features a different tip for broad strokes or delicate lines. Best of all, they can be filled with water, eliminating the need to carry a separate container.

Artists also need a place to mix their colors, so I include a Micro palette. About the size of a credit card, it opens to hold six colors, with a deep well and mixing trays. It can be filled with tube paints or activated directly from a watercolor stick. A clip on the back allows it to attach to an art journal or be held comfortably while working.

Of course, she needs something to paint on. For that, I added ATCs—Artist Trading Cards. These blank cards, the size of playing cards, are used by artists to create miniature works of art to trade and collect. To begin her collection, I included an ATC of my own.

And that’s it. She can grab the mug and be ready to paint anywhere, anytime.

Alternate Paint Options

Instead of watercolor sticks, you could include watercolor tubes. Gouache, colored pencils, and inks also work beautifully with water brushes. Aquarelle crayons are another excellent option. The key is to select materials that react to water.

The exception is acrylic paint. Although water-based, acrylics dry too quickly and can clog the brushes, making them unsuitable for this type of portable studio.
