Haworthia (Zebra Plant) Care

Related to Aloe Vera, the Haworthia plant is native to South Africa. The leaves hold moisture and need very little water. They grow slowly and are a favorite for beginning succulent collectors. In their natural environment, they are an understory plant—they live in the shade with a little or no direct light. They thrive in office environments with daylight bulbs and florescent lights.

Like all succulents and most plants, Haworthia is sensitive to the ambient environment. For that reason, there is no one hard-and-fast rule about its care. In a very dry environment, you may need to water more frequently. Water only when dry. Use a bamboo skewer or stick to check for moisture. Add water very slowly, using a teaspoon or a tablespoon. A single teaspoon may be all you need, so do go slowly. Provide it with indirect light for a few hours a day. If you notice browning of the tips of the leaves, reduce the amount of light. Do not prune. Only remove leaves as they die. Transplant when it outgrows the container.
